Ironwood Forest National Monument16 viewsBureau of Land Management. Monument designated by President Bill Clinton. His intention was to revive the tradition of Presidents creating parks as an outgoing gift to the nation.

Old Rotor22 viewsLooking at this, I can tell it looks old, but I don't know what it really means. Tell us your story, rotor, or we'll hook wires up to you and... oh, I guess that doesn't really scare you does it (what's scary is Ted talking to his rotor)?

New, Beefed Up Socket Set23 viewsPaid a few extra (20) bucks for these additions from Great Neck (I wonder if they're from Long Island). Got the stubby jointed ratchet, a U-joint, and an extra 3-inch extension to get me down in there.

Aphex Twin Peaks9 viewsLess than a hundred years ago, two small twin mountains stood in the valley here. The western twin is made of granite, and stands behind the hill in the foreground. The eastern twin was made of limestone and shale, and has been completely obliterated by the Twin Peaks Quarry. All that remain of the ghost twin are the extensive piles of tailings around and to the right of the surviving twin.

Fluting6 viewsSaguaros have a unique inner framework of ribs which create their fluted exterior. The fluting allows expansion and contraction depending on rainfall and resulting water content.

Teddy Bear Buds3 viewsThese guys should be the next in line to bloom after the hedgehogs, prickly pears, and staghorn chollas.

Crested Saguaro!3 viewsAfter many months, my quest for the crest has finally born fruit. I found this guy just off the San Pedro highway, about 25 miles north of Benson. A word of explanation: The crested, or cristate form of the saguaro cactus is not a separate species, but a rarely occurring oddity, most likely produced by a genetic mutation.

More Crested Saguaro!4 viewsThe same day that I found that last crested saguaro, I found two more including this one in Redfield Canyon.

More Crested Saguaro!4 viewsAnd you thought regular saguaros were photogenic. These guys rock!

Twin Crests6 viewsOne theory about why some saguaros crest supposes that it is caused by lightning or freeze damage. From my observations, I find this difficult to believe because one individual crested saguaro seems to often crest on many different arms at different stages in its growth. My theory: they're FREAKS!

You6 viewsYou lookin' at me too? I thought so. (This crested saguaro lives up in Tohono Chul Park in northwest Tucson if you'd like to continue this conversation...)

Another FREAK!4 viewsWhat the hell is it? The sign says, "Barrel Crest," and notes that it's from Pima County. Hmmm... a crested barrel cactus??? I had never even heard of this extremely rare cristate form of the barrel cactus, known in Latin as Ferrocactus wislizenii, until I visited Tohono Chul Park.

Hedgehog Blossom3 viewsThese guys are the first of the cacti in this are to bloom, and they do so all in about a week. This year they started at the beginning of April, and were all finished by the middle of the month.

Big Fat Cholla Buds3 viewsThese are a traditional menu item here for the Desert People. They buds were gathered around late-April to mid-May and pit roasted over night. I don't know if it's possible to sautee them in garlic. I also don't know if the spines melt in your mouth after sufficient roasting.

Teddy Bear Buds and Blossom!2 viewsLast week in April. The Teddy Bears bloom quietly. No need to brag. No need to show off.

Teddy Bear Blossom0 viewsI like these guys. I like their whole white-on-white motif with the subtle green and yellow. Modestly beautiful.
